The Joppa Civic Group, the Joppa Fire Department, and Joppa-Maple Grove School District will be hosting the Fall Festival on Saturday October 4. There will be a parade that begins at 11 in Joppa. There will be food and games at the park after the parade. All proceeds go to the school district and the fire department. Come out and support Joppa!
Joppa-Maple Grove School District #38 will have four (4) school board seats to be filled at the April 7, 2015 Consolidated Election. Candidates who are elected will fill four-year terms expiring in April 2019.
Candidates for the office of school board can begin to circulate nominating petitions for signatures beginning September 23, 2014. The period for filing nominating papers runs from December 15 through December 22, 2014.
Unlike previous years, changes in the state election laws have moved the responsibility of school board elections from the local board secretary. Those duties will now be handled by the county clerk, or board of election commissioners. Candidates may want to contact the county clerk or the board of election commissioners to see if there are places other than the main county office where they can file their nomination papers.
Candidates for school board will not be filing any paperwork at the local district, explained Bill Biggerstaff, Superintendent, for Joppa-Maple Grove School District 3#8. The county clerk may have petition forms available or blank petitions may be downloaded from the State Board of Elections website, http://www.elections.il.gov/.
Candidates may also want to consult the “2015 Candidate’s Guide,” which can be downloaded from the State Board of Elections website, or contact the county clerk or board of election commissioners regarding the requirements of filing. Biggerstaff also suggested that candidates and voters can get information about the district from its website, and learn about being a school board member from the Illinois Association of School Boards, at: www.iasb.com/elections.
There will be a PTO meeting on Monday, September 22 at 3:30 at Maple Grove. If you are interested in being a part of the PTO this year, please plan to attend. This is an opportunity to get more involved in your child's education.
Starting today, September 8th, ALL students will be eligible for free school breakfasts and school lunches. Joppa-Maple Grove UD #38 was recently approved to participate in a federal program that allows all students to eat for free. The enrollment in the program is retroactive to the beginning of July, meaning some people will be receiving reimbursements for lunches and breakfasts that have already been paid for. Extra items and seconds are not included - these will still have to be purchased at their normal a la carte prices.
