As mandated by the federal government in the "Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act" signed by President Obama, school districts are required to increase the prices they charge for lunches until the prices match the federal reimbursement rate for free lunches. Schools are reimbursed $2.46 for each free lunch served.
The government has calculated that it costs an average of $2.46 to make each meal. The law was designed to prevent schools from subsidizing regular lunch costs with federal free lunch dollars. It has been called the “fair share” law.
The law limits the maximum mandatory increase to 10 cents each year. Schools have been given an online tool to help calculate the minimum required increase. In keeping with the mandates, our lunch prices will increase on February 1, 2013. These increases are not optional. Furthermore, we can expect to see a 10 cent increase each year until our lunches match the federal reimbursement rate.
The following increases are the minimum increases that we must apply:
Joppa Junior/Senior high’s lunches will increase from $1.50 to $1.60.
Maple Grove’s lunches will increase from $1.25 to $1.30
Once again, we do not have a choice in this matter. If we do not increase our lunch prices we stand to lose federal lunch funding dollars. I apologize for any inconvenience that this creates.
